Los Angeles Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs predictions, picks, and game preview for Week 17 of the 2020 NFL season. Rivers leads Chargers to last-second comeback win over KC. Philip Rivers led the Chargers to a pair of touchdowns in the final minutes, then hit Mike Williams for the go-ahead 2-point conversion.

Predictions

The big concern with a playoff team heading into Week 17 is what the NFL has now termed load management. Are the starters going to play, or, with an eye to the postseason, will the team treat it as a glorified preseason game and a chance to rest up for the playoff run?

Chargers

The Chiefs put that possibility to bed early in the week. Coach Andy Reid said on Tuesday, “We’re going into play and do the best we possibly can do — that’s how we’re going to roll with it. There are things at stake. You’ve got to finish the season. I’ve sat here on the other side of it and sat guys — that’s not this situation, so you want to play to win, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

There are things at stake for the Chiefs. Currently third in the AFC seedings, Kansas City has a chance to move up to the two spot, which comes with a first-round bye. Of course, the scenario is also contingent on the Patriots losing to the Dolphins. So NFL odds of that happening are slim, at best.

The Chiefs could also fall to the four seed, although the difference between three and four is relatively low. Both teams will host a wild card game next weekend.

Even with relatively little at stake, the team wants to, as quarterback Patrick Mahomes put it, continue to build momentum. The Chiefs have won five straight and seem to be peaking at the right time.

Plus, while any team could use some rest by Week 17, the Chiefs are relatively healthy, all things considered. Just two players were limited in practice this week—corner Morris Claiborne (shoulder) and guard Andrew Wylie (ankle). The team also put running back Spencer Ware on injured reserve.

Farewell?

It’s been a rough year for the Chargers. Coming off a playoff berth and hopes of competing in the AFC West, the team has struggled to a 5-10 record. Quarterback Phillip Rivers dropped hints earlier this week that he may not be back next season. The 38-year-old expressed frustration over the Chargers’ temporary home stadium for most of the last three seasons, saying he remembered what home games used to be like.

“I mean, could be,” Rivers said of his potential last game with the team. “I don’t necessarily expect that it is or I don’t necessarily think it’s a crazy thought that it will be. I think you just don’t know. … We will just kind of have to see.”

The pick

Rivers is nursing a sore thumb and may be without left tackle Russell Okung (groin), who missed last week and didn’t practice this week. So don’t expect an emotional last stand from a team saying goodbye to its franchise quarterback. Instead, look for the Chiefs to roll over an uninspired, frustrated divisional foe and cover the large NFL betting line for this game against the Chargers.
